What makes it worth the money
No other way in, it explains the Old Town, and it costs less than a museum.
Three things, and the first one is the one people underrate.
There is no alternative access. The chambers are privately held and locked. Unlike the closes and stairs of the Old Town, which you can walk for nothing at any hour, the inside of the South Bridge is not available to you in any other way. A ticket is not a convenience here; it is the door.
It explains the city. Edinburgh’s Old Town is very difficult to read from street level, because the street level is a lie in several places — you are on a bridge, or on a roof, or on a road laid over a demolished close. Standing inside one of the arches makes the whole thing legible in a way no amount of walking above it does.
It is cheap for what it is. An hour with a guide, underground, in an eighteenth-century structure, for $25. That is less than the castle and less than most of the museums.
The case against
Five honest reasons it might not be for you
All five appear in the one-star reviews, and all five are predictable in advance.
- The chambers are empty
If you are expecting rooms with furniture, doorways and fireplaces, you want Mary King’s Close. The vaults are stone rooms and a story.
- The group can be large
Especially in August. Thirty people in a chamber is a queue rather than an experience, and it is the single most common complaint.
- It is cold and enclosed
Ten degrees, low ceilings, no daylight. Genuinely uncomfortable for anyone who dislikes tight spaces, and there is no way round that.
- Some of it is not documented
The post-1820s material is thin, and tours fill it with stories. If that bothers you, book the historical tour, which stays closer to the record.
- It is not a performance
Nobody jumps out at you and nothing is staged. If a show is what you wanted, the Edinburgh Dungeon does that deliberately and does it well.
