Underground ghost tour Edinburgh: what the evening slots are actually like

The same chambers, run at a different hour, with a different intention. A vaults tour at four in the afternoon is an explanation; the same rooms at eleven at night are a performance. Neither is dishonest about which it is, and knowing the difference before you book is the whole of this page.

A dark stone corridor under the South Bridge in Edinburgh late at night

Quick answer

An underground ghost tour in Edinburgh is a guided hour in the South Bridge vaults run in the evening or late at night, with the emphasis on atmosphere and story rather than on the 1788 structure. Three of the tours on this page are pitched that way, from $24. Nothing on this site involves actors jumping out at you — that is the Edinburgh Dungeon, which is a different thing entirely.

What happens

What happens on an underground ghost tour?

Ten minutes on the street, forty-five underground, and one minute in the dark.

The shape is the same as any vaults tour and the difference is emphasis.

You meet on or beside the Royal Mile. The guide spends the first ten or fifteen minutes above ground, because the chambers make no sense until you know you are standing on a bridge. Then a locked door, a stone stair, and the temperature drops about eight degrees in twenty seconds.

Underground, the evening tours spend less time on construction dates and more on what happened in the chambers after the trades left, which is the poorly documented part and therefore the part with stories attached. A good guide is explicit about that distinction even while telling them, and the better operators are noticeably careful.

There is usually a moment near the end where the lamp goes down and the group is asked to be quiet. That is what people remember and it is what the hour is built towards. It works because the darkness in those chambers is total — no windows, no gaps, no residual light of any kind — not because anybody has done anything to you.

Choosing one

Five things to check before booking a night slot

The listings blur together; these five separate them.

  • The start time

An evening tour at seven and a late tour at eleven are not the same product. The later ones are pitched harder and set higher age limits.

  • Whether it is history or performance

Both are on this page and both are honest about it in the listing text. Read past the title.

  • Whether anything jumps out at you

On these tours, no. If that is what you want, it is the Edinburgh Dungeon on Market Street, which is an attraction with actors.

  • The age limit

Every vaults tour sets one and the late-night slot sets it higher. Check before booking for a family.

  • How far ahead you are booking

The evening slots are the first to sell out, and in August they go days in advance. Free cancellation to 24 hours makes holding one costless.

If the fright is the point rather than the history, the honest alternative is an attraction built for it — and it is not underground.

Common questions

Underground ghost tours, answered

What is an underground ghost tour in Edinburgh?

A guided tour of the South Bridge vaults run in the evening or late at night, with the emphasis on atmosphere and story rather than on the structure. The chambers are the same ones the daytime tours use.

Are Edinburgh underground ghost tours scary?

Atmospheric rather than frightening. There are no actors and nothing jumps out at you. The unsettling part is genuine darkness and genuine silence under a busy street, which is more effective than any effect.

How much is an underground ghost tour in Edinburgh?

From $24 for the evening slot to $27 for the late-night one. All are free to cancel up to 24 hours before.

What is the difference between the evening and late-night tours?

The hour and the pitch. The evening slot is a standard vaults tour after dark; the late one runs harder, sets a higher age limit and is explicitly built to unsettle.

Do underground ghost tours have actors?

Not on this page. Every tour here is a guide with a lamp. Actors, sets and rides are the Edinburgh Dungeon, which is an attraction on Market Street rather than a historical site.

What should you wear on an underground ghost tour?

A layer more than the street needs. It is about ten degrees in the chambers all year, and colder-feeling at night. Closed shoes with a sole, because the stairs are stone and sometimes damp.
